I was looking at my last few posts and realized they’ve been focused on either weather or parenting. How tedious. Let’s get wacky this week and talk about… reading. But because we’re going balls-out and breaking all the rules, I don’t even mean books! I’m going to recommend three online articles! You weren’t expecting this much excitement on a Saturday morning, but you’ll adjust. Strap in and enjoy the ride.
“In an environment populated by emotionally fragile and mentally unhealthy people, it’s much easier to act without accountability and to continue to take away resources, personal liberties, and human rights without recompense.”
The MAGA Mental Health Crisis is not a spirit-lifter, to be sure, but it is an interesting angle I hadn’t considered before. My ever-shrinking ability to consume political news - something I used to actively enjoy - sometimes makes me feel like a shirker. But nah; I’m just taking care of myself.
“We often raise issues of justice and equity not to advance meaningful social causes but to generate positive attention for ourselves by denigrating others.”
Speaking of mental health crisis, it’s been a long time since I’ve railed against social media and this piece reminded me it was time. These once-innocuous communities have introduced a phenomenon that now bleeds into every corner of our world: moral grandstanding. We are all guilty of this and we need to stop. And you know a great first step? Delete your social accounts. I would never lie to you, dear friends, so believe me when I tell you that deleting your Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts will break open your brain in such wonderful ways.
“I am a mother of young children and the temptation to offer him a snack was sometimes overwhelming.”
I swear to the gods, this really is a well-written article and I’m not recommending it because it’s about Tim Riggins and good lord is he aging well and did you notice there’s no mention of a significant other and he appears to be living on his own in Montana?
You don’t have to pass this post on to a friend but it’d be a lot cooler if you did.
You had me at "Tim Riggins." ;)
