Three Things: A Quickie
I only have 30 minutes to write this because the current tenants of a house I want to look at think a rainy Sunday morning is the best time to do so. Sunday mornings are my sacred time. I make a big breakfast. I turn on my Jazz playlist and imagine that I’m cooler than I am. I get the actual paper version of the New York Times and read about things I normally wouldn’t click on whilst online. It’s a good time.
All of that had to start earlier than normal today but happened anyway so… I’ve kind of forgotten what I was complaining about? Ignore me and go watch some stuff.
🎥 Winter’s Bone (Max)
If you’ve already seen this, I recommend a rewatch. It was Jennifer Lawrence’s breakout role and damn does she nail it. It’s a small story, about a teenage girl looking for her criminal father in the mountains of the Ozarks. But its focus on a frequently derided and misunderstood population is one without judgement, almost to the point of seeming documentary-like. The gender dynamics alone are freaking fascinating.
🖥️ The Secrets of the JFK Assassination Archive (Intelligencer)
It is a lesser known fact about me that I love a good conspiracy theory, and I have been fascinated by the godfather of conspiracy theories - who killed John Kennedy - for decades. (Yes I saw that dumb Oliver Stone movie 50 times.) It is pretty freaking clear to even a casual observer that Oswald was a patsy, so I feel vindicated by this article. It’s long but wonderfully written and full of mid-century spy tales.
📺 Pete Holmes: I Am Not for Everyone (Netflix)
Do you need to laugh? Of course you do. The world is approaching peak madness and desperation and all we can do about it is weep gently into our pillows. So for god’s sake, laugh when you have the opportunity. Pete Holmes is delightful and even delivers a lovely riff on God at the end. You won’t be sorry you watched this.
I did it! One post in 30 minutes. I’m going to go look at this house now. Cross your fingers.
xoxo
